Secret Life Of Bees Response

I haven't read the book but I have seen the movie. I really enjoyed the movie, I thought it was good. The cast was dynamic. The actresses did a good job-the roles seemed to be well thought out and the lines were realistic. I thought the story had a good plot. I don't agree with Phil Boogie when he says "My grandmothers, as loving as they are/were, would not have let a random little white girl just move into the house in 1964...in the South." Dakota Fanning's character wasn't just a random little white girl. From what I got from the movie, Queen Latifah's character knew who she was from the jump. So the little girl had a connection to their family and she may have felt like since she raised her mother, and now she was in trouble that should she take her in and help her too. As far as the Emmit Till reference, who thinks that tragedies will happen to them? I think that young guy was caught up in puppy love with her and he wasn't thinking about any consequences. I'm sure he didn't think they would get caught or else he wouldn't have even tried to sneak her into the negro section. I don't think that this movie is an example of black self-opression. These sisters were financially stable and willing to share that with a white girl who wasn't.
